My OLPH experience
While I was at OLPH, and observing Alexia. I watched her as she played with the paint at the paint and colouring station. While she was playing, I asked her what she was doing, and she told me how she was going to mix the colours to make different colours. Then she started explaining how, when she mixed certain colours, they made a whole new colour. After that, I asked her if she wanted me to write down her name so she could colour it, but she told me that she knew how to write her name, as she was writing down her name, and she said each letter out loud, which really showed me how intelligent she was. The level of creativity I think she was in is the Pre-Schematic stage. I think she is in this stage because she can write down her name and know what each letter exactly is, but there were other instances where she wasn’t very artistic and interested in more artistic things.
Something I did during Small Group Free Play Time was when we were outside with the kids, and we brought a speaker to play music and have fun with them outside. When we started, I noticed that not all of the kids were fully engaged with the music because it was chilly. So I started telling them that if they danced around and clapped, they would start to get warmer. After I told them that, all the kids started dancing and becoming more and more engaged with the activity. I realized that children also have more fun playing when there are other people around them having fun and doing the same thing they are doing too.
Philosophy Statement
My philosophy I go by when I’m teaching is that children and toddlers learn best when they are being supervised to make sure they are safe but are also able to explore and not be trapped in a room or a play area, and in an area that is fun, teaches them, and safe all at the same time. I believe that children need to be playing and growing up in environments where they can see a glimpse of the real world while also having fun, being social, and staying safe. I don’t think that everything a child knows and learns about the world should be taught to them, I think that they should explore and find things out for themselves because then they can grow up to be independent and be able to be very good at critical thinking and being able to solve problems that make them think hard. This encourages them to be risk takers and still be able to grow and learn in a safe environment.
As a teacher and ECE, I think that my job isn't to just make sure they follow the rules of the classroom and to learn only what i teach them, but it's also to make sure they know they're in a space where they can feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions without feeling dumb or wrong. I also want to teach them by doing exactly what i teach and always being kind, curious, and excited to learn new things instead of giving them the right answers and telling them when they are wrong, I want to teach them how they are wrong and what they can do to make sure they're right the next time they ask themselves a question. I want to make sure they are able to be confident that they can solve any problem I give them by thinking it through, never giving up, and using teamwork with their classmates.
I think that some of my biggest strengths when i teach are my energy and the way i can change how i teach to make sure every kid in the classroom is able to learn the best they possibly can, this is because i know that every child is different and almost none of them learn the same way so the only way to make them all feel included is by making sure i change my teaching style sometimes and interact with the children differently. I also try to ask for advice on how to get better and what I do wrong because I know that there are people who know more than me and can always teach me something or show me how I can fix certain things that I do while I'm teaching so I can become an overall better teacher.
Finally, I really want to and always have wanted to work with children and their families because I love seeing children be proud of something they've done and I love seeing them grow especially when I know I've helped them grow and become better people. I also think that working with the children's parents is a really big part of being an ECE because the parents are the ones who teach the child how to grow at home and because of that we are all a team working together to help the children grow into the best possible people they can be. In conclusion, I am extremely excited to start interacting, teaching, and growing with children and their family as an ECE and teacher. I will always want to make sure every child feels safe, excited to learn, and happy every day.
